All About Trans – Transparent Love

My career never ceases to afford me new challenges and to explore new ways to use the voice that I have developed over the years. The Industry is ever-changing and ever-evolving but the need to communicate fluently with a wider and more diverse audience never diminishes.

When working on the pioneering BBC comedy, Boy Meets Girl, the first to have a transgender character as its lead I was determined that our production would open up opportunities for other trans people – behind as well as on camera. This we succeeded in making happen.

During the course of publicising the series I met with All About Trans, an organisation dedicated to securing media space for trans voices. I later worked with them on “TransParent Love“, an exhibition of portraits by leading photographer Amanda Searle. These captured transgender children with their mums. They went on show at Flare Festival at the BFI, attracted a wide viewership and also online support from none other than Emma Watson who shared one of the portraits on her Instagram feed. One can only imagine the delight of our assembled subjects at the private view when ‘Hermione’ shared news of the day – on Mothers Day, with her many millions of followers. This caused a ripple effect and many millions more learned about transgender kids in a creative and non-confrontational way. This was my aim.
